Holbeach Primary Academy PESSPA Vision statement
At Holbeach Primary Academy we recognise that PE & School Sport plays a key role in the promotion of the physical, social, emotional and mental wellbeing and healthy lifestyles of our children. As an academic discipllne PE aims to: develop the knowledge, attitudes, motor skills, behavioural skills and confidence needed to adopt and maintain physically active lifestyles.
We strive to inspire our children through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We recognise that PE can boost academic achievement as well as develop the whole person through the physical and is much more than teaching physical skills and sports. It is about helping children understand their body, and how through the physical they can develop their social skills, thinking skills and emotional skills and learn how to apply and transfer them to different life situations impacting positively on their physical and mental wellbeing. We encourage, develop and promote opportunities for all our children to participate in competitive sports, offer a wide range of clubs and sporting events/activities, as well as promoting the importance of having a healthy and active lifestyle as children and into adulthood.
Children across the whole of KS2 over the academic year will participate in swimming lessons to meet swimming and water safety requirements.
Physical Education:
Physical education is the planned, progressive learning that takes place in our school curriculum timetabled time and which is delivered to all children. This involves both ‘learning to move’ (i.e. becoming more physically competent) and ‘moving to learn’ (e.g. learning through movement, a range of skills and understandings beyond physical activity, such as co-operating with others). The context for the learning is physical activity, with children experiencing a broad range of activities, including sport and dance.
School Sport:
School sport is the structured learning that takes place beyond the curriculum (i.e. in the extended curriculum) within school settings; this is sometimes referred to as out-of-school-hours learning. Again, the context for the learning is physical activity. The ‘school sport’ programme has the potential to develop and broaden the foundation learning that takes place in physical education. It also forms a vital link with ‘community sport and activity’.
Physical Activity:
Physical activity is a broad term referring to all bodily movement that uses energy. It includes all forms of physical education, sports and dance activities. However, it is wider than this, as it also includes indoor and outdoor play, work-related activity, outdoor and adventurous activities, active travel (e.g. walking, cycling, rollerblading, scooting) and routine, habitual activities such as using the stairs, doing housework and gardening.
Welcome to our PE & School Sport in 2025/2026
Following on from last year’s successful achievement of the Gold Sports Mark we are aiming again to continue to develop our programme of competitions, both inter school and intra school, and clubs to offer as many opportunites as possible to all our children to be physically active and lead healthy lifestyles.
In PE lessons our aims are for children to KNOW MORE and DO MORE with progression of Fundamental Movement Skills, as well as developing core learning behaviours across Core PE Games, Gymnastics and Dance.
In School Sport our aims are to provide children with access to a wide variety of sports and where possible pathways through school/club links to progress their abilities by joining local sports clubs.
We offer swimming to ALL KS2 children, Playground Leader training and leadership opportunities for Year 5 and Year 6 children, along with Bikeability training for Year 6 children.
Sports Leaders will also be assisting the PE Leader with in house sports events.
Curriculum development and staff CPD is supported by realPe staff alongside the scheme of work.
P.E Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement
Intent
Holbeach Primary Academy believes that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim. We also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Holbeach Primary, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.
Implementation
- PE at Holbeach Primary Academy provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, striking and fielding games, gymnastics, dance, swimming, athletics and outdoor & adventurous.
- The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
- Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Lunch time sports clubs and organised activities are available each week and children can attend a wide range of after school sports clubs.
- Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events with other schools within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children. Olympic values underpin the sporting events and specific categories of focus for the events have now been established eg fully competitive, participative with a competitive element and fun based social and emotional.
- Each year a small group of Year 6 children are invited to become Sports Ambassadors for the academy and support lunch club. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunch-time clubs and our annual Sports Day.
- Children participate in enrichment activities covering a variety of sports throughout the year. For example archery, ultimate frisbee, dodgeball and volleyball, again providing the children with an opportunity to develop, improve their fitness, transfer taught skills and tactics, as well as trying new sports where possible.
- Children across key stage 2 swim once a week for 6 to 7 weeks across the academic year. A six week block is kept free to support any year 6 swimmers who have not yet achieved 25 metres to further develop their swimming skills and water safety ability prior to secondary transition.
- The “Daily Mile” is completed by classes daily, to help meet the government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day.
Impact
We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport and activity. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
Skills Progression in PE
Christmas activities – 12 days of fitmas
This is primarily a twitter based programme, set up by Rupert Gibson, Agilitas Sports and School Games Organiser for our local schools, so schools following us @agilitassports will see the challenges and get all updates. I’m hoping that schools/parents will tweet their efforts using #MerryFitmas #Fitmass @agilitassports and I’ll provide some prizes for the best ones. I’ll be looking out for inventive ones, costumes, effort, passion etc. Obviously Day 9 (Fri 11th) will be the Santa Dash!!
If you and/or your school doesn’t have a twitter account I’ve created a web page and will add the videos there too https://www.agilitassports.
PESSPA Timetables 2025/2026
These are the timetables for the planned PE sessions and after school clubs for the whole school for each term over the year. These can sometimes be changed last minute if circumstances require or other events/activities get rescheduled.
Children should continue to come to school in their PE kit on their timetabled days – teachers will notify children if PE kit is needed on other days.
PE Kit should be a plain t-shirt; white, blue or black (or white/black school PE t-shirt with HPA logo), black/blue shorts, suitable footwear (non-marking for indoor use), joggers, blue or black and school jumper or plain sweatshirt, white, blue or black (when necessary – colder weather).
Please note that jewellery should NOT be worn in PE lessons for safety reasons and CANNOT be worn during any school competitive events.
PE & School Sport Clubs 2025-2026
There will be a range of PE & School Sport Clubs being offered for the children to attend over the school year. These will either take place during lunchtimes or after school. As well as school staff, we are fortunate to have the support of staff from other organisations helping us to provide these opportunities. Most clubs will be limited to a maximum of 16 children. Our aim is to provide a club opportunity for every child in school that would like to attend one.
Newsletters will include details of all clubs on offer each term and letters will be sent out in the term prior to the club taking place to enable names to be collated and children/parents to be notified. Information will also be displayed on the PE & School Sport notice board in the main school hall.
If your child would like to attend, please can they speak to the respective adult running the club, to check for any available spaces or see Mr Green.

This is being run by our Playground Leaders during the lunchtimes across KS1 and KS2. A good number of children are having a go and getting involved and we hope as the weather improves lots more will take up the challenge!! The plan will also be for the Leaders to get members of staff involved!!!

12 days of Fitmas
Last year Agilitas Sports put together a ’12 days of fitmas series of fun activities’ for children and families to do over the Christmas period (while we were all involved in lockdowns). Using the link provided below you can access these again this year and have some fun at home. Your teachers may well show and do some of these activities in class with you too.
Hopefully we will NOT be in any lockdowns this Christmas but in case the weather restricts our opportunities to exercise these activities may be a fun way of working off those Christmas dinners and chocolates!!
