Art

Intent

At Holbeach Primary Academy, our aim is to sculpt creative, expressive children through the delivery of the Art and Design Curriculum. We want children to explore and experiment with their own ideas by creating and inventing their own works of art. Throughout our art lessons, children will be taught key skills to enable them to use a range of art techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpting and crafting.

Once a child’s creative mind has been unlocked, we will build on the other important aspects of the Art and Design curriculum, how art has shaped history. This includes learning about famous artists and artwork, making links in our own work and looking at evaluating techniques.

Implementation

To ensure children feel that their art lessons have a sense of purpose, sessions and activities relate directly to the class topic. This provides cross- curricular links and children can see how their learning is progressing.

Throughout the school we have a two year planning cycle covering a variety of topics and skills. There is also a progression ladder for teachers to use when planning lessons to ensure key skills and techniques are appropriate for the intended year groups. Including the use of different mediums and materials, as well as the specific art skills being covered such as colour washes, collages and basic drawing skills.

In addition to weekly art lessons, children are able to explore and express themselves through theme days, and after school clubs. In the younger years, opportunities are also given to children through continuous provision.

Impact

Ultimately, the impact we aspire to throughout the Art and Design lessons at Holbeach Primary Academy, is to produce children with a passion for Art and Design. That is able to express themselves through a variety of mediums and techniques.

We also hope that at key stage 1, pupils’ will demonstrate skills in manipulating tools and equipment to create work and use their imagination. Children will develop and embed fine and gross motor skills and use a range of tools competently. This includes cutting with scissors and using the correct grip for specific art tools.

At key stage 2, a depth and mastery of pupils’ practical knowledge, such as different artistic methods, techniques, media and materials is secure. This will allow pupils to communicate, record and create effectively. The significant time for deliberate practice, reencountering the core knowledge in different contexts and with growing complexity will develop mastery. Children will demonstrate practical knowledge and encompass multiple applications. Children will be able to express understanding of the multiple forms in which art exists and secure their knowledge of the subject’s breadth and diversity.

Art and Design

The Art and Design curriculum at Holbeach Primary Academy continues to provide opportunities where pupils are able to express themselves creatively and emotionally.  Teachers ensure that cross-curricular links are made throughout each topic area and allow the children to build upon previous knowledge as well as develop a wider range of skills.

Art at HPA gives us the chance to develop our understanding of not only the world around us but also the thoughts of others and ourselves.  Our own creativity and imagination is explored alongside the technical aspects of different techniques and mediums. The role of significant figures from world history of art and design (both functional and aesthetical) are key to the curriculum as they give us context and comparisons to our own work.  They also allow us to develop our understanding of artistic movements and the importance of self-expression and continued development in the world of industry.

Chinese New Year

This year we celebrated and discussed the celebration ‘Chinese New Year’.

Early Years learnt about the traditions associated with Chinese New Year and used their fine motor skills to create decorations.

Key stage 1  and 2 presented their learning in a Celebration assembly and linked their learning to our British Values.
