Modern Foreign Languages
Intent:
The Modern Foreign Languages curriculum at Holbeach Primary Academy intends to provide children the opportunities to explore another language of French as well as other cultures.
This learning provides opportunities for children to broaden their acceptance and understanding of other languages and cultures as well as increasing chances to speak, study and work abroad in their futures.
Implementation:
The learning of the French language at Holbeach Primary Academy works through providing opportunities to listen, speak and write using the vocabulary they learn during sessions. Topics covered throughout Key Stage 2 are broad and balanced allowing children to strengthen their French langauge and knowledge as they move through the school.
Impact:
The enjoyable, varied and valuable curriculum we follow for French provides the children with the opportunities to succeed outside of the school regarding culture and language. Developing an additional language is not only a valuable skill in the world of work once they leave Holbeach Primary Academy, but also provides the children with the practical skill should they wish to visit, study or work abroad.
Modern Foreign Languages
At Holbeach Primary Academy, throughout Key Stage 2, children follow a programme of study for French.
Our aims of the programme of study in French are to…
– Develop spoken language of French.
– Develop written language of French.
– Increase confidence in using the French language.
– Provide opportunity for the children to have the ability to succeed should they choose to study or learn abroad in their futures.
We build both spoken and written language across many topics as the children progress through the key stage.
During Years 3 and 4 children’s learning is focussed on; themselves, games, celebrations, portraits, friends and growing things.
During Years 5 and 6 children will focus on; holidays, money, stories, sports, animals and weather.
Through each unit, new French vocabulary is shared and learnt and children have the chance to develop pronunciation as well as written opportunities to share their learning.
On Friday 24th September we celebrated European Day of Languages across the school.
Miss Barnes challenged each class to research the language of a different country each. Within our classes we then created a menu for the English staple dish ‘The Full English Breakfast’ in the language we were given. Check out some pictures of our menus! Can you practice saying these words?
In Ash Class (Year 1), we referred to English words we knew to practice the very tricky pronunciation of some words. This also helped us to remember them without any help when Miss Barnes asked us what the German language for the ingredients was!
Cherry Class (Year 3 & 4) took their learning even further! Miss Penney and the members of Cherry Class learnt to discuss their opinions for the foods on the menu. George said “Me gusta embutido” because he likes sausages and Oliver said “No me gusta champinion” as he really doesn’t like mushrooms!
