Food Technology

What is Food Technology?

Design and Technology is all about having ideas and developing them – designing useful things, creating them and then trying them out. There are lots of different ways of making things, from cooking to woodwork, building to sewing. So what is Food Technology?

Below see tips and tricks to support your children learning how to cook and bake at home. Included are some links and videos to watch to learn how to cook certain recipes as well as learning certain techniques.

Macmillan Coffee Afternoon

This year for Macmillan we will be hosting a cake sale after school on Friday 26th September 2025.

We have attached some ideas of how you can use fruits and vegetables in your bakes below.

There are also recipes linked to countries in Europe as we celebrate European Day of Languages on the same day!

We welcome any donations of cakes and biscuits for the bake sale and look forward to seeing you there!

Cooking at home

Are you interested in baking and cooking at home?

It is very important that children understand the principles of a healthy and varied diet.

From the true colour of carrots to how to spot the difference between kinds of cows, why onions make us cry to the magic behind growing straight cucumbers, Stefan Gates reveals where our food comes from and how it is made.  These clips are taken from the BBC series ‘The Secret Life of Our Favourite Dishes.’

There are 5 different favourite recipes included in the series:-

– Chicken Curry

-Fish and Chips

– Salad

-Shepherds Pie

-Spaghetti Bolognese

Below see other links of how you can begin cooking or baking at home with your children. Skills learned through cooking can support other areas of development such as counting, weighing, designing and reading.

New Skills

Preparing food is a perfect activity for children and cooking fresh, nutritious food is an important life skill.  Therefore it is important that children are taught a range of cooking skills with increasing competence such as cutting, grating, peeling, arranging and cracking.

Skills snippets videos

An expert team of food teachers developed these Skills Snippets to make teaching cooking skills easier. If children grasp basic skills (e.g. using knives, peeling, grating) then they have a toolbox for life.

Food Technology at Holbeach Primary Academy

We all need to eat food. Where does food come from? What different types of food are there? What are good things to eat? These are questions that children from EYFS to Year 6 explore throughout topic days, our Design and Technology curriculum, our Science curriculum and PSHE topics throughout the year.
