Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement
Intent
With a world filled with technology at our fingertips, ever increasing dependency on devices and an increasing range of opportunities to develop the future of generations to come, there is a significant need for pupils to recognise, explore and develop their understanding of how the world is interconnected and the ways in which technology is used. With each experience, their understanding of how the world works is nurtured alongside their creativity, resilience, problem solving and ability to communicate in different ways.
Our Design and Technology curriculum at Holbeach Primary Academy feeds into a broad and balanced education where all children, regardless of ethnic, origin, gender, class, aptitude or disability, have equal access and entitlement to enjoy and succeed.
Implementation
Design and Technology at Holbeach Primary Academy is integrated through our cross-curricular topic areas. Children develop their understanding of how several factors contribute to the complexity and success of the design, manufacture and success of a product. They practise to take on and improve the relevant skills that enable them to design, build, join, shape, structure and cook effectively. Finally, the benefits and skills of evaluations are explored to complete the process and support the pupils’ reflection of their learning and outcomes.
This begins at an early age with investigation or objects and processes- exploring the properties of materials and the theory of cause and effect. As children grow their understanding of differences in choice, design, creation and evaluation develops, allowing them to think critically about products. They then have the tools to make their own choices and improve upon their errors.
Impact
When faced with a design brief, individuals and groups consider the impact of their choices in materials, techniques, ingredients and designs. Therefore, pupils at Holbeach Primary Academy develop as not only designers but also as cooks, builders, craftspeople and consumers.
The research, design and evaluate process enables the learner to sustain an idea from start to completion with the ability to apply creativity, lateral thinking, problem solving, scientific and mathematical knowledge, practical skills, analytical skills and reflection. From doing so, pupils understand the dynamics of industry, explore real life contexts and nurture their senses of resilience and achievement.
