Week Beginning Monday 23rd April 2018
This week we will be continuing our topic, 'Why Do Zebras Have Stripes?'. In literacy we will be looking at the story, 'Mama Panya's Pancakes', another story set in Africa. We will be looking at the characters and events and also using this to help us learn more about life in African villages. We will also be looking at the new sounds, 'ear' and 'oi' and embedding our reading and sentence work. In maths we will be looking at number bonds to 10 and time. We will be reading times for o'clock and half past and making these, thinking about times of the day that we do certain things. In topic we will be continuing to look at African crafts and life in their villages. The weather is very changeable at the moment, but if the children could have a sun hat and extra drink in school this would really help. Fingers crossed that the sunshine stays with us.
Week Beginning Monday 16th April 18
This week we will be beginning our new topic for the term called "Why Do Zebra's Have Stripes?" We will be beginning our literacy this week by using the text, 'Handa's Surprise' which explores some of the animals and fruits that might be found in Africa and a little girls journey from one village to another to see her friend. We will be looking at 3 new sounds, 'oy', 'ou' and 'ir' and how we can apply these when reading and spelling. In maths we will be looking at number patterns and doubles and halves, using numicon to help us explore these. In topic we will be starting to look at African animals and their different attributes and homes.
Week Beginning Monday 26th March
This week we will be looking at The Easter Story and thinking through the events that happened. This will prepare us well for our visit to church on Wednesday morning. In phonics we will be consolidating our sound work and applying this through spelling and word building. In maths we will be looking at calculation and using numbers up to 20. We will be using the numicon pieces to help us visualise this and solve the calculations. Our topic lessons will help us understand other Easter traditions and foods that are eaten. We hope to end our Easter term with an Easter egg hunt!!! Enjoy your holiday time.
Week Beginning Monday 19th March
This week we will be looking at the story of 'Mr Gumpy's Outing'. We will also be looking at the tricky digraphs and trigraph sounds to build and spell words and use these in captions and sentences when we read and spell. In maths we will be looking at capacity as well as number bonds to 10. We will be using the numicon to help us to find the number bond pairs. Our capacity work will involve us in comparing capacities and how much different containers can hold. We will be using pasta and water to explore this. Don't forget that this week is Sports Relief Week and we will be completing a Challenge A Day. This will culminate in us completing a circuits challenge on Friday and having an assembly to celebrate and find out more about what we are raising money for.
Week Beginning Monday 12th March
This week is Science Week so we will be making the most of this by using and completing some exciting experiments. During our topic times we will be exploring these. In Literacy time we will be carrying on consolidating our sound work to apply these to spell and word build, working on our blending skills and sight vocabulary to improve our reading and writing skills. We will be looking at a particular character called 'Fireman Sam' this week and what he does, how he helps people and the equipment he needs to carry out his job. In maths we will be looking at numbers to 20 and beginning to use these in calculation skills. We will be using the numicon to help us to visualise this. We will also be consolidating our work on telling the time using o'clock and half past. What another busy week!!!!
Week Beginning Monday 5th March
Welcome back after some severe weather. We are pleased to be back and working hard. This week we will be looking at some stories about emergency vehicles to find out about what they are used for and how they help us. We will also be continuing our phonics work, looking at tricky digraph and trigraph sounds and applying these to read and spell words. We will also be looking at the high frequency words we have covered and seeing how many we can read and recognise on sight. In maths we will be looking at telling the time, o'clock and half past and thinking about times of the day that we do things in our routine. We will be looking at days of the week and seasons too. In topic we will be furthering our work on emergency vehicles and will hopefully be having a visit from the police who will talk to us about their job and show us their car. We are hoping to wear some of the uniform and listen to the siren. Don't forget that we will be celebrating World Book day on Thursday 8th March as we missed out last week due to school being closed. Please remember to bring your favourite books for book sharing time.
Week Beginning Monday 26th February
This week we will be looking at some non fiction information on vehicles through our literacy work. We will be looking at key features such as a contents page and index to help us find the information we need. We will be continuing some work with our phonics and looking at the tricky digraph and trigraph sounds we have covered and applying them to read and spell words. We will also be recapping the high frequency words to improve our sight vocabulary further. In maths we will be collecting data and presenting it in different ways such as tally charts, tables, pictograms and bar graphs. We will be linking this to our topic by collecting data about how we travel to school and conducting traffic surveys. In topic we will be looking at other vehicles and how they work this week. Please don't forget that we have World Book Day on Thursday 1st March and the children can bring in a favourite book to share in our book share session on Thursday afternoon.
Week Beginning Monday 19th February 2018
Welcome back after a short and well deserved break. This week we will be starting to look at our new topic, 'Are We Nearly There Yet' which is all about transport. In Literacy we will be looking at a text called, 'Mr Gumpy's Motor Car' and will be using this not only to look at cars and how they move but also the differences between cars that were built long ago with modern cars we use now. We will also be consolidating and embedding the tricky digraph and trigraph sounds that we have covered, really looking at how we apply these to our reading and spelling work. I maths we will be looking at number patterns and money. We will be looking at different coin values and how we can make amounts. In topic we will be completing our second day of investigation alongside the rest of the Academy and will be exploring movement and using our exploratory skills through Science. Lots to do!!!!!!
Week Beginning Monday 5th February
This week we will be looking at how to write instructions. We will be thinking about the 'bossy verbs' we can use to begin these. We will also be consolidating the phonics work we have been going over the last term. We will be concentrating on applying these to read and spell words, working on our blending skills to improve our reading skills. In maths we will be looking at 2D shapes and using these alongside colours to understand and make repetitive patterns. Calculation will also be looked at to go over using tens frames to add and subtract practically to solve. In topic we will be looking at how to stay safe on the Internet to fit in with National Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 6th February. The time has flown!!! cant believe we have completed another half term. Well done Maple and Chestnut you have worked super hard and deserve some time to rest. Lets hope we bring back better weather and lighter days when we return!!!! Have a great break.

This week we will be looking at the story, The Billy Goats Gruff. We will be exploring the story and the events. We will be looking at characters and thinking through whether they are good or bad. In phonics we will be consolidating our knowledge of digraph and trigraph sounds that we have been looking at and applying these when we read and spell. We will also be beginning to use these when reading captions. In maths we will be looking at calculations using tens frames and numicon as well as looking at and using positional language. In topic we will be looking at bridges to link with the story and the best materials that we could use.
Week Beginning Monday 22nd January
This week we will be looking at the story, 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and will be looking at the good and bad characters and what characteristics and behaviour makes them good or bad. We will also be consolidating our phonics work, using these to word build and beginning to read and write captions. In maths we will be exploring length using shorter and longer and appropriate vocabulary when comparing. Towards the end of the week we will be using cubes as non standard units and rulers to measure in centimetres to compare. In topic we will be looking at beans and what they need to grow. We will be growing our own beanstalks.
Week Beginning Monday 15th January
This week we will be looking at Castles and Kingdoms as settings for lots of fairy tales and traditional tales. We will be looking at the different parts of a castle and what they are called and how castles and kingdoms have now changed. We will be looking at the tricky sounds that we have been covering such as 'ay', 'ee' and 'igh', going over how to apply these when reading and spelling. We will also be starting to use and recognise 'ow', 'oo' and 'oo' and using these when reading and spelling too. In maths we will be going over our calculation skills and applying these through tens frames and numicon. We will also be using and looking at 3D shapes and where these are in the environment.
Week Beginning Monday 8th January 2018
This week we will be looking at the Traditional Tale: The Gingerbread Man. In literacy we will be looking at the characters in the story and discussing their actions and thinking through whether they are good or bad. We will also be continuing our phonics work and looking at applying these when spelling and reading words. We will also be moving towards reading and writing captions and sentences. In maths we will be exploring weighing and measuring using some ingredients that would be needed to make gingerbread people. We will also be looking at numbers to 20, ordering these and recognising in and out of order. In topic we will be looking at the materials that would make a good raft for the gingerbread man to cross the river safely as well as testing how the temperature of water might affect how quickly a gingerbread man might disintegrate. A very busy week ahead!!!!!
Week beginning Wednesday 3rd January 2018
This week will be a little shorter but we will be beginning our exciting new topic where we will be exploring different fairy tales. This week we will begin with Hansel and Gretal and will be looking particularly at good and bad characters and what characteristics make them good or bad. We will also be recapping some of the more recent sound and phonics work we have covered and how we apply this when building words and captions. In maths we will be going over how to use the tens frame to calculate and help us visualise quantities to make us more fluent with our arithmetic. In topic we will be exploring the main characters from Hansel and Gretal and the trail that Hansel left with breadcrumbs, exploring better materials that could have been used.
Week Beginning Monday 18th December
Cannot believe that we only have 2 days left!!!! This has been a whirlwind of a term with lots going on and the children have worked incredibly hard. We are all really proud of everything they have achieved and they continue to impress us with their learning. On these last 2 days we will be completing some crafts that have a Christmas/Winter theme on Monday which the children will be able to bring home and share with you. On Tuesday we will be enjoying some carols round the tree and finishing off the term with some fun learning activities that have a Christmas theme. We all hope that the children enjoy a well deserved break so they are refreshed for the January term and the new year. We have not sent homework specifically for the holiday but have put homework books back in to reading packets in case the children would like to use the words we included to practise. Merry Christmas to all and we hope you enjoy the holidays.
Week Beginning Monday 11th December
This week we will be continuing to consolidate our number learning using the numicon together wit digit cards so we can match the quantity and worth with the digit it represents. We will also be looking at 3D shape again and using parcels and presents and their different shapes to help embed these. As well as naming the shapes this week we will also be looking more at their properties. We will be exploring how many edges they have, corners they have and other properties that makes them different. We will also be taking a look at where we see these shapes in real life. In literacy we will be embedding our knowledge of the sounds that we have covered this time and using them to read and spell words. Year 1 children will be moving this forwards to read and blend captions. We have another busy week ahead with the Pantomime on Tuesday and Church on Friday morning as we continue our countdown to Christmas!!!
Week Beginning Monday 4th December
Cannot believe we have reached December already!!! How time flies! This week we will be looking at the story of the Nativity to work alongside our performance this week. We will also be consolidating the sound work we have already covered and learning a new sound: 'nk'. The children will be bringing homework home at the end of this week and this will be the final piece for the term so they are able to enjoy their Christmas break. In maths the children will be looking at 3D shapes and going over numbers to 20 and some calculation work. Please don't forget out afternoon and evening performances on Wednesday 6th December. We look forward to sharing this with you all and celebrating the children's achievements. they have been practising hard and are getting excited about wearing their costumes and sharing their acting and singing skills. A reminder also about the Academy Christmas Fair on Friday 8th December from 4:30pm to 7pm. What a busy week ahead!!!!
Week Beginning Monday 27th November
This week we will be looking at the story, 'The Jolly Postman' and covering the new sounds, 'qu', 'x' and 'ng'. The children will be looking at the letters and the different characters that the postman meets along his way. We will be applying the new sounds alongside others that we already know to build words as well as beginning to read short captions. In maths we will be looking at 2D shapes and identifying these, thinking through how they are different and the properties they have. We will be continuing to practise our Nativity with the Early Years children ready for our upcoming performance and look forward to meeting with some of you for parents evening on Thursday.
Week beginning 20th November
This week we will be continuing to rehearse for our Early Years performances we hope that your child is happy with their role. In phonics this week the children will be learning the sounds ch, th and z. This will mean that we have covered all of the initial sounds of the alphabet and three diagraphs. During our maths work this week we will be continuing with some of our 10's frame word during the starters of lessons but are moving onto measuring during the main input of the sessions. During our topic work we will be looking at migration and thinking about another way creatures survive in the winter.
Week Beginning Monday 13th November
This week we will be looking at animals that hibernate. We will be sharing a story about the different animals that hibernate and why as well as looking at 3 new sounds, 'v', 'y' and 'w'. We will be applying these as well as other sounds we know to build and spell words. In maths we will be beginning to look at taking away. We will be continuing to use the tens frame to help us and visual pictures of hedgehogs. The children will be using their counting skills to support them. They will also be consolidating their number formation and recognition skills. In topic we will be continuing to look at hibernation and why some animals do this. Just a reminder that Friday 17th November is Children in Need Day and the children are able to wear something spotty.
Week Beginning Monday 6th November
This week we will be looking at Remembrance. We will be sharing a story that explains the uniforms the soldiers wore and how this relates to the colours in the poppy as well as explaining why we remember the soldiers that were injured and gave their lives. We will also be continuing with our sound work, looking at 3 new sounds. These will be, 'sh', 'r' and 'j'. For Year 1 we will be consolidating knowledge and applying these to word build and hear when reading. In maths we will be looking at numbers to 20 and embedding some visual and practical adding skills up to 10. In topic we will be looking at poppies and making poppies and linking this to our work in literacy.
Week beginning Tuesday 31st October
Welcome back from our first half term holiday. This week we will be starting by looking at the story of Guy Fawkes linked to Bonfire Night and why we celebrate this. WE will also be looking at 3 new sounds, 'e', 'l' and 'h' and continuing to develop our word building skills using and applying these. Year 1 children we will be trying hard to build captions and sentences and using word banks to support our work. In maths we will be looking at 1 more and 1 less than a number to 10 to consolidate some skills that we began to learn before half term. As well as this we will be introducing the symbols, + and = and applying these to begin to add 2 amounts using counting or if in Year 1 the picture method to find the totals. In topic we will be looking at fireworks and bonfire safety.
Week Beginning Monday 16th October
This week we will be looking at the story of 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. We will be exploring the story and some of the choices that Goldilocks made and thinking through whether these were good or not. We will be thinking about the characters and whether Goldilocks should write a letter to apologise to the bears. We will be looking at three new sounds, 'u', 'b' and 'f'. This week we will be concentrating on applying the sounds we now know and starting to look at words we can build using them. Year 1 children will be building simple sentences and captions about the story. In maths we will be looking at ordering numbers to 10 and more and less. This week sees the end of our first half term together and the children have done so well. They have learned lots of new skills and been trying really hard with all of their learning so deserve a well earned rest. Week Beginning Monday 9th October
This week we will be continuing to consolidate our sounds and recognition. We will also be looking at another 3 new sounds, 'o', 'c' and 'k'. In Year 1 we will be using these to build words and begin to use these and our high frequency words to build captions. In maths we will be looking at ordering and forming our numbers to 10 as well as looking at sizes and how we order these. We will be trying hard to compare and use the correct vocabulary to look at size this week. In topic we will be looking at animal homes and comparing how these are different to our own. The children will have a letter in their diaries this week which will ask if they are ok to taste porridge in our final week so if you could look out for this and let us know if there are any allergies we need to be aware of.
Week Beginning Monday 2nd October
This week we will be looking at three new sounds, 'n', 'p' and 'g'. We will also be using the story, 'Cant You Sleep Little Bear'. We will be continuing to look at the sounds we have already covered and beginning to use these to word build. In maths we will be looking at 2D shapes as well as consolidating our number work with numbers to 10 and their formation. In topic we are looking at homes and houses and we will be concentrating on some of our DT skills, building with construction, looking at houses now and then and using boxes and junk modelling to make and build models of our own. Just a reminder about photos on Thursday 5th October. We have switched our PE session to Tuesday to ensure that the children look smart for their photos!
Week Beginning Monday 25th September
This week we will be going over the sounds that we have learned, 'm', 'a' and 's' and then moving forwards to look at 3 other new sounds, 'd', 't' and 'i'. We will be looking at the story, "Owl Babies" and discussing the characters and making predictions about what we think might happen. Year 1 children we will be using these sounds to build CVC words and begin to use these to write captions. In maths we will be continuing to look at numbers to 10, ordering them, working on formation and recognition. Year 1 children will be starting to add using numbers to 10 and the picture method to help them count. In topic we will be looking at how we care for animals. Another fun filled busy week ahead.
Week Beginning Monday 18th September
This week we will be looking at another story about 'The Large Family' where Mr Large has to take charge as Mrs Large is poorly. We will be beginning to learn some letter sounds too. We are going to try and recall and write 'm', 'a' and 's' and write these correctly. The Year 1 children will be working on building and spelling CVC words that have these in such as 'mug', 'man', 'ant', 'sat' etc.... In maths we will be counting, ordering and working with numbers up to 10 this week and making sure that we can write them the right way. In topic we will be comparing how we have changed since we were a baby, looking at what babies need and how that is different to us now. We will be sending some homework home looking at formation for Early Years and sound recognition to consolidate learning and some word work for the Year 1 children.
Week Beginning Monday 11th September
This week we have been sharing our experiences we have had with our grandparents and other family members. We have talked about what we like to do at home and what we like to play. We have also had the opportunity to share and bring in our favourite toys to talk through how they work and why we like them so much. We all shared and listened well to one another. We have also been looking at a story about the 'Large Family' and what happened in the story, 'A Quiet Night In'. We have looked at rhyming words and have been using our listening to help us hear and identify sounds and say them. In maths we have been practising our recognition and formation of numbers to 5. Each day we practise our names and it would be great if we could practise these at home to to help us in our classroom learning. We look forward to another fun filled week next week.

Week Beginning Monday 17th July
Cannot believe that we only have 3 days left together Maple and Chestnut. We are planning on having lots of fun and enjoying our last days together. We just wanted to take the time to say "THANKYOU" for being amazing, "THANKYOU" for making us smile each day, "THANKYOU" for being such great learners, "THANKYOU" for making us proud. We have loved teaching each and every one of you and will miss you all so much when you enter Year 1. We know you will continue to thrive and succeed as you move further through the Academy. Well done and enjoy your long deserved holiday.
Week Beginning Monday 10th July
Cannot believe this will be our last full week together. We will be looking at tricky sounds that we have covered so far in phonics and applying these to our reading and writing. We will be continuing to get ready for Year 1 by writing sentences and practising the tricky high frequency words to check we can read more on sight. In maths we will be looking at sharing, halving and doubling work. We will be using 2D shapes to do this as well as quantities. In topic we will be looking at bees and how important they are to us and how they help the plants. On Thursday we will be working hard to impress the judges for Holbeach in Bloom with our vegetable plot and outside area.
Week Beginning Monday 3rd July
This weeks begins with Sports Day morning so we are hoping for good weather. In English this week we will be looking at a sports day story and then consolidating our sound work with tricky digraphs and using these when reading words and sentences. We will be continuing to apply these when we write and spell words too. In maths we will be looking at ordinal numbers and collecting data to make pictograms, tally charts and block graphs. In topic work we will be continuing some work on minibeasts and gardening work.
Week Beginning Monday 26th June
This week is a very busy week that sees some changes and transition work for all of us. We will be looking at the story, 'The Very Busy Spider' and looking at facts about spiders and what we know. In maths we will be looking at numbers to 100 and recognition as well as calculation using a 100 square and number lines to get us ready for Year 1. In topic work we will be looking at spiders, their habitat, what they eat and their attributes. On Thursday and Friday the children will be joining their new teachers for some transition work to get ready for Year 1 which is exciting and will be fully supported by the Early Years time to ease this change.
Week Beginning Monday 19th June
This week we will be looking at the story, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". We will also be looking at some more tricky sounds such as 'ew' and 'ire' and thinking about where we see these in words and we can apply them to read and spell. In maths we will be looking at symmetry through our use of butterflies and using different equipment to model this and make some symmetrical patterns. In topic work we will be looking at the life cycle of a butterfly and the stages that are part of this. We are looking forward to another fun packed learning week.
Week Beginning Monday 12th June
This week we will be looking at WORMS. WE will be using a story that also teaches us about some worm facts in English and beginning to learn some more tricky sounds such as 'aw', 'are' and 'ea' and how we can apply these when reading and spelling words. In Maths we will be using worms to help us compare and measure length as well as continuing to consolidate our calculation work. In topic we will be trying to make a wormery for our classroom so we can explore how they mix and aerate the soil and are good for the soil. An exciting week!!!
Week Beginning Monday 5th June
Welcome back everybody to our final term together as Early Years. This week we will be beginning with a recap on the tricky high frequency words and sounds that we looked at and how well we can apply these when reading and spelling words and using in sentences. We will be looking at a non fiction book about minibeasts to find out more to help us classify in our topic work. In maths we will be consolidating our number recognition of numbers that are higher than 20 using a hundred square as well as number patterns, counting in 2's and 10's. We will also be looking at number problems and our understanding of vocabulary such as plus, altogether, more, subtract, minus, take away and using this to solve calculations. We are looking forward to a fun packed, warm and sunny term!!!!
Week Beginning Monday 22nd May
This week we will be following up all the learning that happened on our trip to Tattishall Farm Park. We will be writing recounts to retell what we saw and the events that happened. We will also be recapping and consolidating our phonics work on split digraphs such as ' i-e' and 'o-e'. We will also be looking at the high frequency words and applying these when reading sentences. The half term homework will be based around working on recognition and spelling of these to prepare us for Year 1. In maths we will be concentrating on problem solving through worded problems and vocabulary and applying our calculation skills. A busy week to end our busy term!! We hope you all enjoy a well deserved week off and hope that the weather is kind.
Week Beginning Monday 15th May
This week we will be looking at a story called 'The Cow That Laid An Egg' and will be doing some story writing work connected with this using word banks. We will be beginning to look at split digraphs such as 'I-e' and 'a-e'. In maths we will be exploring and looking at capacity and measuring and comparing capacities, beginning to think through using ml and litres. This is a busy week with Sports Day on Thursday afternoon and our trip to Tattershall Farm Park on Friday. I think the children will need a well earned rest at the weekend!!!. Lots of fun things planned this week. We can't wait.
Week Beginning Monday 8th May
This week we will be looking at the story of the Scarecrow's Wedding by Julia Donaldson, one of our favourite authors as well as consolidating some of the tricky sounds that we have been learning through our reading and spelling work. We will be looking at sharing in maths work and beginning to relate this to simple division. We have some tomato, cucumber and courgette plants to plant in our vegetable patch this week and will be working hard to keep all of those plus our seeds watered this week.
Week Beginning Tuesday 2nd May
This week we will be looking at the story of 'Eddie's Garden' and thinking about planting and what we would like to grow in our vegetable patch outside. We will be thinking about how we can make signs for them so we know what we are growing when we harvest later. In maths we will be looking at weighing and comparing how heavy and light some are. We will be using scales and looking at direct comparisons and then moving on to look at reading scales and thinking about grams and kilograms. In topic we will be looking at what seeds need to help them grow and beginning to plant some ready for our garden.
Week Beginning Monday 24th April
This week we will be looking at the story, Chicken Licken. This will also fit with our topic work, consolidating all our work on the life cycle of a hen and looking at animals that live on a farm and what they provide. Through our English work we will be continuing to practise our phonics work, applying the sounds that we know to read words and sentences. In maths we will be looking at time, further understanding the time of day we do things, reading clock faces and making times. We will also be looking at our number bonds to 10 and days of the week. We have been enjoying using and exploring the new outside area and hope to begin planting seeds and flowers soon to brighten it up further.
Week Beginning Monday 27th March
This week we will be consolidating our phonics work from this term with particular attention on application to spelling and reading. We will be looking at the Easter Story and the events that happened ready for our visit to Church on Friday 31st March. In maths we will be looking at calculation and money. We will be using coins and thinking about how we can make amounts. In our topic work we will be looking at Easter being a Spring Festival and the new life that begins to be seen through this season. We will be going to All Saints Church on Friday 31st March to be part of our Easter Service which will begin at 10:30 am. We would like to wish all of the children and families a Happy Easter and hope you enjoy the Spring Break.
Week Beginning Monday 20th March
This week we will be looking at water transport in particular and thinking about floating and sinking. We will be exploring capacity work through maths. We will be using rice, pasta and water to look at this and will be using words such as full, half full and empty as well as beginning to look at measuring capacity through millilitres and litres. In English we will be consolidating on all of the tricky digraph and trigraph sounds we have been covering as well as the high frequency words and exception words we have been trying to read and spell on sight. The week will end with Comic Relief and the children being able to wear something red for school that day.
Week Beginning Monday 13th March 2017
This week we will be beginning with a really exciting activity to celebrate Science week in Holbeach Primary Academy. We will be participating in a silly science workshop in the hall and are really looking forward to experimenting. We will share photos with you so you can see what we have been up to. In literacy we will be looking at Mr Gumpy's Motor Car as we are continuing our topic work looking at vehicles that travel on the road. We will also be continuing our phonics work and consolidating our recognition of high frequency words. In maths we will be looking at money and how much different coins are worth. Topic will be a continuation of our vehicle and transport work. Another busy week ahead!!!!

This week we will be continuing with our topic on transport. We will be looking at different vehicles and what they are used for, sorting whether we would use them to travel on land, on rail, on water or in the air. We will be concentrating on vehicles and transport that is used on road and rail. We will be looking at signs and signals and what they mean and how they keep us safe. In maths we will be continuing some work on time, using the clock faces to look at o'clock and half past this week. As well as this we will be looking at the seasons and number bond pairs to begin to find the pairs that make 10 to help with our mental calculation. In literacy we will be looking at some new tricky sounds and how we apply these to read and spell words that contain them. The book work will help us to learn some facts and information about different vehicles.
Week Beginning Monday 27th February
This week we will be continuing to look at Emergency Vehicles and through Literacy we will be looking at Fireman Sam as a character together with continuing to look at some more new tricky sounds. In maths we will be looking at routines and how we sequence events together with some calculation work. Topic will involve us looking at other emergency vehicles this week such as fire engines and ambulances. As a treat the children will also be getting a visit from a tractor so they are able to look at this vehicles, how it is different from others and what it is used for. This visit will happen on Thursday.
Week Beginning Monday 20th February 2017
This week we join back together for the second half of our Spring Term, where we hope the days become lighter and the weather becomes drier and warmer!!! This week we will begin our new topic which is all around Transport. We will be looking at Emergency Vehicles this week and are excited about having a visit from the Police Car on Wednesday morning. The children will have the opportunity to ask questions about the job that the police do and how they keep us safe. They will also be looking at the police cat itself and the features it has such as a siren and flashing lights and the purposes of these. To link with this the children will be looking at data handling and collecting information on vehicles and traffic, making graphs and charts in different ways and interpreting what this information tells us. In literacy they will be looking at a text about emergency vehicles and then continuing with their phonics work, concentrating on applying this to help them read words and captions. A very busy start to our new term!!!
Week Beginning Monday 6th February
This week we will be concluding our work on fairy tales and traditional stories. The children have really enjoyed comparing them and looking at the similarities and differences they had. They have done some fantastic work on characters and this topic has really helped to develop their writing further. This week we will be concentrating on our recognition of high frequency words and will start to look at some new ones in literacy. We will also be looking at how we write instructions and the useful bossy verbs we use to begin these. Our topic work will culminate in a fairy tale party on Wednesday 8th February where the children will be able to change in to a fairy tale costume and enjoy their sandwich and snacks. this will help to celebrate all the hard work the children have completed this half term.
Week Beginning Monday 30th January
This week we are focussing on the text The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We will be looking at the text and encouraging children to act out the story using puppets. On Friday we will be using the book work to carry out a "Big Write" which the children are becoming very confident with. During maths this week we will be looking at re-capping on some of the number facts we have covered so far this term including; using a number line, doubling and finding number bonds to 10. For our main focus of our maths work this week we will be using positional language. This will also allow the children to use the new Blue-Bots that we have in school so look out on Tapestry for these. During our topic work we will be looking at different bridges around the world and how bridges are structurally sound.
Week Beginning Monday 23rd January 2017
This week we will be using the traditional story, Jack and the Beanstalk. Through this we will be exploring length by comparing and using comparative language, such as longer/shorter/ longest/shortest, using non standard units such as cubes to compare and then moving on to measuring in cm using rulers and metre sticks. We will be looking at particular phrases and language used in the story such as, Once upon a time, happily ever after as well as sequencing events to retell and using drama to bring the story to life. Through our phonics work we will be looking at 3 new sounds, air, ar and or and homework this week will help to consolidate this learning. In topic we will be looking at how we plant beans and what they need to help them grow, making predictions and tasting different sorts of beans. A busy, fun packed, learning filled week ahead !!!!
Week Beginning Monday 16th January 2017
This week we will be continuing to think about our new topic, Traditional Stories and fairy Tales as we consider particular settings that are common to these, Castles and Kingdoms. The children will be looking at some of the history and facts about castles in literacy together with a story that is set in a castle. They will also be continuing to look at another 3 tricky sounds, oo, oo and ow and applying these within words. In maths we will be exploring 3D shapes together with consolidating our calculation work. We will be exploring where 3D shapes can be found in castles and kingdoms and how these relate to everyday life. In topic we will be using our DT skills to build 3D junk models of castles and thinking through the parts they need and which materials are best suited to these.
Week Beginning Monday 9th January
This week we will be looking at another traditional tale, 'The Gingerbread Man'. We will be looking at the story and how it is structured in Literacy time and comparing it with a visual version to see how they are similar and different. We will be continuing with some more of our sounds to apply to word building and reading. Another skills we will be working on is reading and recognising high frequency words and using these in captions and sentences. In maths we will be looking at weighing and how we measure this. The children will be looking at ingredients and thinking about how we would make sure we had the correct amount of each following a recipe. We will also be continuing some calculation work using number lines.
Week Beginning Wednesday 4th January 2017
Welcome back and we hope you all had a lovely Christmas break. We will be beginning our topic on Fairy Tales and Traditional Stories this term. We are beginning with Hansel and Gretel and looking at how the story is structured and some of the conventions we find in traditional tales. If you have any traditional stories and fairy stories at home that you would like to bring in and share that would be lovely. We will be recapping our calculation work in maths and looking at direction and pathways.
Week Beginning Monday 12th December
This certainly will be a busy and fun packed week. We will be joining Key Stage 1 in watching the pantomime on Tuesday, travelling over to the University Academy of Holbeach for Christmas dinner with the rest of the Academy on Thursday and travelling to All Saints Church on Friday for the Christmas Service. As well as being a part of all of these activities we will also be continuing our learning. In maths we will be consolidating our 3D shape work and calculation skills and in English we will be recapping our new sounds and applying these to our reading and writing work. Monday will be our final PE lesson so we will be sending PE kits home this week.
Week Beginning 5/12/16
This is going to be such a busy and exciting week. We will be practising, practising, practising our Christmas Performance ready to perform on Thursday 8th December at 2pm and 6pm for grown ups. The children will have a dress rehearsal that they will be performing for Small Saints Pre-School and Key Stage 1 pupils on Wednesday 7th December and then a further performance for Key Stage 2 on Friday 9th December. The children have all worked so hard to learn their words and the songs to help us create a memorable experience. We are just hoping that all the bugs stay away!!!! In between times the children will be continuing their learning, looking at a new sound, -nk and where this appears in words applying to our word building skills. We will be looking at 3D shapes and some of the properties they have in our maths. What a great week it is set to be.
Week Beginning 21/11/16
This week the children have enjoyed finding out about hibernation and the animals that hibernate at this time of year. As part of our phonics this week we have looked at the sounds “v, y and w” and will be sending these as homework next week. During maths this week we have looked at calculation skills which is the focus of our homework this week.

Week Beginning Monday 14th November
This week we will be looking at hibernation as part of our topic work and exploring why some animals do this for Winter. In Literacy we will be continuing to look at some new initial sounds such as, 'v', 'y' and 'w' and using these to build and read words. We will also be moving our reading forwards by applying these skills to begin to read captions and simple sentences. In maths we will be continuing some calculation work by exploring how we take away and using pictures to hep us do this. Just a reminder that Friday 18th November is Children In Need Day and that the children are able to wear something spotty. There will also be a cake sale, If you refer to the letter from Friday 11th November that will have all the details for you.
Week Beginning Monday 7th November
We are really pleased with how well the children have come back from their half term holiday and settled back into their learning. This week we will be continuing to look at calculation and applying the picture method to help us to find totals using counting to help us. We will be looking at 3 new initial sounds, 'sh', 'r' and 'j' and then using these to build and spell words. In topic we will be looking at Remembrance and exploring this through poppies, their colours and significance.
Week Ending Friday 21st October
We are so proud of how well all of the Early Years children have settled in to the Academy. They have worked hard all term and are now ready for a well deserved break. We will return to the Academy on Tuesday 1st November. The children have some reading homework to complete over the half term holiday to help consolidate their phonics and develop their blending and word building skills. When we return we will be looking at a variety of different celebrations as part of our topic. If you access the Curriculum Overview as part of the class page you will be able to see all of the different things we will be covering. Week Beginning 17th October
First of all we would like to congratulate the Early Years children for completing their first term we Holbeach Primary Academy. We are all very proud of what they have managed to achieve over the past few weeks.
For our final week of the term we will be carrying out a lot of consolidation work on our phonics and our maths work. This will support the reading of simple words such as cat, dog, man, mum, dad... as well as embedding the sounds so far. During our maths work we will quickly revisit areas of shape and number recognition. Our text this week will be "The Three Little Bears" and the children will get the opportunity to taste porridge.
On Friday 21st October we will be celebrating the Stand Up to Cancer initiative with a bake sale and non-uniform day. We wish the children a happy holiday and thank you for your support during the first term.
Week Beginning Monday 10th October 16
The children will be continuing their phonics and will be looking at the new sounds for the letters, 'o', 'c' and 'k'. They will be using these together with the other sounds that they know to begin to word build and read, for example, 'cat', 'sock', 'sit' and 'can'. They will be looking at another story called 'Guess How Much I Love You' and will be completing some discussion about language , making predictions and doing some hot seating to ask characters questions. The children will be looking at sizes and more and less in number work, thinking through how we order and sort sizes using particular vocabulary such as larger, smaller, taller, wider. We are really pleased with how hard all the children are working on their reading and homework and would like to thank you as parents and carers for supporting them so well.
Week Beginning Monday 3rd October
This week we will be continuing to learn and explore our letter sounds and will be concentrating on the sounds, 'n', 'p' and 'g'. Alongside exploring the sounds these letters make we will be forming them with different materials such as water, pen, paint, pencil, chalk and sand. In maths we will be looking at 2D shapes as well as continuing to consolidate our recognition, ordering and formation of numbers to 10. The children will be exploring their likes and dislikes using their senses in topic this week. We look forward to sharing some of these learning experiences with you through Tapestry. Don't forget we have our first parent and carer evening on Wednesday 5th October from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm. We look forward to seeing you and will be enclosing appointment slips in the diaries for those of you that have returned your requests.
Wednesday 21st September
Today we were very lucky as we had a visit from Mrs Booth's friend Emma and her baby, Archie. We learned about what Archie eats, when he sleeps, what he likes and how he has a bath. Archie's mummy told us about all the things a baby needs at home and when she takes him out for the day.
Archie was very happy and was dribbling lots. His Mummy said it was because he was starting to get teeth. We asked Emma lots of questions about babies!
Week Beginning 26th September:
This week we will be learning the sounds d, i and t as part of our phonic work. The children will continue to embed last weeks sounds as well as learn new ones. The children will be bringing home some new sounds as homework to practice the formation. The children will continue to work on numbers to 10 within our maths sessions. The children will also continue to work on number formation alongside this. As part of our topic work we will be looking at likes and dislikes.

Week Beginning Monday 19th September 16
This week is a busy week with the children's newspaper photo being in Tuesday's edition of the Lincolnshire Free Press, a baby visit as part of our topic work on Wednesday and a Charity Fundraising Day for Jeans for Genes and Clic Sargeant on Friday where the children will be allowed to where their own clothes and make a donation. The letter does ask if possible for them to wear denim and pink. In our learning we will be beginning our letter sounds and recognition and formation of these as well as looking at numbers to 10, ordering and writing these. Another busy and fun filled week ahead for Maple and Chestnut class.
Week Ending 16th September 16
This week we have been really busy writing our names and getting to know our numbers. We have been using different mark making materials such as chalks, pencils, felt pens and paint brushes to make patterns, letters, numbers and pictures. The children are beginning to recognise their numbers to 5 and write these. Their homework this week is concentrating on these skills. They have worked well together this week and enjoyed getting to know the learning areas and how we use these. Well done and keep it up Maple and Chestnut Class.
Week Ending 9/9/16
This week we have been busy settling into Holbeach Primary Academy life. The children have adjusted to the routines well and have enjoyed their first few weeks. The children have discussed their favourite books and we have talked about our families. We have also come up with some classroom rules with the children which we are working well towards. Next week we are moving onto our topic "Why Do You Love Me So Much". We will update this weekly to give you a taste of what the children have enjoyed and been getting busy with.
