This week the children have enjoyed looking at the traditional tale of Hansel and Gretel. The children had noticed that in certain versions of the story the trails that they left were different. Today we explored which materials would be the best to make a trail out of. We used; sweets, biscuits, conkers, pine cones and twigs. Before laying our trails we talked about which we felt would be the best. The children agreed that the sweets and the biscuits would not be the best as creatures might eat them. Paige thought that the twigs would not be the best as birds may need them for their nests. Harrison thought that the sticks might not be good as it could "be like the story of the Stickman and a dog might take them away". Charlie D thought that some of the sweets might melt. We went out and set our trails, as we were coming back in there were a number of seagulls circling us. When we returned the next day as we had predicted to biscuits and some of the sweets had been take. Charlie D said "if we had done this in the spring the birds might have taken the twigs for their nests". Charlie LB noticed that the sugar had come off some of remaining sweets he said "that's what happens if you suck a sweet, it comes off in your mouth" and we talked about how it had dissolved.
